My $0.02:

It's undeniable that RATM have increased social awareness of certain issues, regardless of whether you think they're "sell-outs" in a comercial sense. Some, including me, would argue that the independent platform isn't terribly conducive to broadcasting your message on the widest scale possible.

Isn't increasing social awareness the first step for ANY social issues campaigning?

They made lots of money. Meh to that. They sing about what they're interested in. Some of you guys are just plain bitter... and some of you just don't sell as many records as RATM.

Rah.

Democratic reform, child care, aid for farmers, pro-choice agendas, Amnesty International and human rights in general, integrity in the press...

The social issues they choose to support / voice an opinion about are actually quite diverse...

I'd say for the most part, and this is entirely based on anecdotal evidence, sure the kids know what Amnesty International and War and Corporations are now...but does it go beyond the catch phrase?

Fuck. In high school every kid with an RATM patch on their bag thought they were a political activist, but didn't know shit other than "uh, its leik bad and stuff".

I will lose no sleep if they never play again.

This thread should just be a poll about who does and doesn't like RATM, because that's all I'm hearing.

I see that you two are still frequent users of the Straw Man Argument.

As I actually said, they've increased awareness of these issues (and more) through their campaigning. Additionally, they've raised money for these causes through touring and other public appearances.

Does actual funding count as making some kind of difference, or are you guys gonna stick with the good ole "dig the heals in and argue logical fallacies" strategy?

;-)

Later.

As I've actually been saying, I'm actually quite convinced they have not raised any awareness. This is based on my interaction with Rage fans, as well as the fact that the public isn't aware of shit.

I don't know what money they've raised for charities but I'll bet my left testicle it's a pretty miniscule piece of the pie compared to what they've raised for themselves and their corporate backing. The fact that they did this (apparently) doesn't make me respect them or take them any more seriously. They still suck and they're still full of shit regarding their supposed goals and ideals.
