I like what Roger Ebert said about it: "This is like Iggy Pop singing 'My Funny Valentine,' which he does very well. "

It started out great, then got boring in the second half, when they were just wandering around and nothing was happening except long conversations about nothing.
Too much Jeff Bridges mumbling away incomprehensibly.
I have not see The Great Lebowsky, so all this wink wink nudge nudge stuff about that is lost on me.
Screw Jeff Bridges. He sucks.

the fact that you thought there was any "wink wink nudge nudge" means you didn't get the film.

And the fact that you were bored means you haven't seen any classic Westerns.

You mean "get" like a joke? Are you implying this film was a joke? If so, I agree. A joke at the expense of $13.

He said "abides" at one point, which anybody knows is a clear Lebowski reference. I'm sure there was lots of other stuff, seeing as the film cannot possibly have contained all that boredom for no reason. I guess I'm the fool then to go watch a Coen bros movie with Bridges in it and not expect it to be some Lebowski inside joke.
I used to devour Westerns as a kid: I'll take High Noon or Sergio Leone over this tosh any day.
All this "Oh the Coens have finally done a straight genre movie and done it well" is such nonsense. The first half was classic Coens grotesque, the second half was a badly edited mess with too much Lebowski in it.

I didn't even notice that 'abides'. It's not like the Coens coined the word, either.

I don't know what you're talking about re: the second half. I couldn't tear my eyes away.

Finally watched Black Swan last night, have to say I really enjoyed it. Some nice mind screw in there, felt kind of like pi sometimes with the paranoia and tension.

watched true grit . thought it was really good .

i thought maybe it would be like classic material , but dont think it was . so there was a lil sense of let down , i guess i had read too much hype . its funny how when a film gets slammed , sometime i will enjoy it more , or vice versa . preconceived notions are a real factor for me !

as far as doing a "western" they did a great job , the sense of how desperate and money hungry folks were . the goofy characters kept it interesting , but some of that crossed over into "fantasy land" for me . believability . it will be interesting to see what J.B. does next .

I'm undecided, hate Westerns, like the Coens, love The Dude. Other half is keen, which will probably swing it.

Gonna watch "The Road" soon, just got the DVD delivered from "Love Film" (online uk DVD rental).

Elaborate - I mean, I know nothing aboot the film other than Natalie Portman + Ballet - so far neither of these elements are moving me to check it oot, but someone above says they liked it, so there must be more to it than that?

please elaborate , that is one is on my list , i think we have similar taste .

oh and true grit didnt feel that western-y , the dialogue , some of the characters , seemed too "modern" . i think youll enjoy it for sure . just dont go into thinking "classic" like i did .

"You know the movements and you can do the dance but why are you holding back? You have to let go and give in to the chaos! Dancing is about losing your control!"

that is pretty much half the film. The other half is an 80's perfume ad.

Nina is a priss who is so OCD with her ballet that she can only nail the white swan part- which is unfortuniatly only half of "Swan Lake" The other half is the black swan which Nina knows how to do but can't quite pull off right because she is afraid of giving in to the madness.

It's all that shit I hated in Pi. "You have to stop with these calculations- you're going to far! there's so much more to life then math...You have to live!"

It also had some cringy dialog
