I don't think it's about developing ego...I think some people do it for an ego stroke (Hoor*cough*Kraat) It's more about getting feedback and constructive criticism.
If Lotus69 says "You suck!", I think Lotus69's opinion shouldn't matter to you.
But if Lotus69 says "I like the way your voice cracks gently when you sing "Koala, Koala" and WeedConsumer420 agrees and suggests "You should do that more!" then you ahve yourself some constructive criticism to ponder.
