Disagree.
I have changed tact on this philosophy. If a story is worth telling, it's worth telling twice, many times, hence why Shakespeare is still relevant today.
Besides, in most cases, remakes are radically different from their predecessors. And movies are America's culture, so why stifle? Technically, The Dark Knight is a remake (of old ideas/stories), would you rather that film never happened? Great reworking.
I know you are not saying "don't remake
anything", but I felt the above was worth saying.

the dark knight could have been way better
if only they had a director/producer team that knew action movies well
nolan can't hack it
this guy should have got the chance:
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001532/
predator
die hard
last action hero
thomas crown affair
die hard with a vengence
that's one helluva action movie resume

Die Hard you can have, but:
Predator - dumb action/alien movie, full of silly flaws, fun popcorn flick
Last Action Hero - shit
Thomas Crown - ok remake of an ok movie
Die Hard 2 - inferior sequel. A string of action cliches and the latest big bangs, put back-to back with a terrible ending
Plus I'm not sure an "all out action director" would have brought out the performances of Bale, Ledger et al.
Anyhoo, TDTESStill will make profits, so the movie industry will keep doing what it does, our opinions notwithstanding. Do you fancy it or not?

Hey wait a minute, he also did Red October and Medicine man.
Ok, maybe he would work.

ive said this a million times but
i will defend last action hero to my death
yes, the plot is stupid and the kid is beyond annoying
but the gags mocking every other action movie are GOLD
'how did you know there was a guy in there?'
'der's always a guy in der'

Dark Knight was as good as it could be. Overrated? Yes. But still good. Nolan delivered.
John McTiernan? If you want something similar to Batman & Robin or Batman Forever, then sure, why not?

nolan sucks
the whole part of the movie where they made batman out to be the bad guy?!
what bologna!
that shit was pointless
they really couldn't think of anything better than that?
when gary oldman's wife looks up and is like, "this is all your fault." <--- not exact quote but you get the idea
anyway, she says something like that and batman is perched on a ledge all like, "damn, i fucked up."
C'MON!!
and the little/almost no use of Scarecrow
don't you think they could have embellished on him and had a really fucking badass scene or scenes that either gored you and/or scared you senseless? but they didn't. they might as well not even had him in there.
B- with A+ potential

michael mann or zack snyder would have done better if you don't like mctiernan

The Dark Knight was alright
But really they had no business re-making the Batmans so soon after Burton (Batman Begins was just terrible)
If you want to fuck a corpse, at least wait till it's cold
But I want to see Earth Stood Still...I stole a poster from the subway, it's in my kitcheon

Maybe that part was a bit stupid. For example I didnt like the fact that they arrested Dent when he announced that he is the Batman.
I also thought it was weird how quickly he became evil after the gasoline spill on his face. But all that is probably in the comics. Can't blame the director.

Maybe. But then again, he had all the fun in the previous film.

B- is far above average. The Joker did it for me. But I dont think it ever had A+ potential.
All and all a good flick. And what Mr John so nicely pointed out, I doubt that John "Rollerball" McTiernan could have brought out the performances of the two main actors. I doubt that they would even sign up for the film, if he was the director. And I dont really see John Travolta as a good choice for Batman.
Michael Mann? Maybe. Nolan said he was inspired by Heat. But do you really think he would have made it better?
I dont. Not because Im a fan of Nolan. To be honest, I think all his films are overrated. But he hit the nail on the head with these two Bat flicks.
Unfortunately (or not) we will never know for sure who'd make the better film.

Burtons "Batman" was released in 1989, "...Begins" was in pre-production since the failure of "Batman Forever" in 1995, so there's a ten year difference between the two series', which probably contributed to "...Begins" making enough at the box office to make "Dark Knight".
Which has made LOADS of wonga, so I think "they" (Warner Bros) had plenty of business selling their product when they did.
I think it's fair to say that the seemingly infinite number of Batman cartoons and graphic novels have kept an interest in the charactor, against say, the 60 year wait between old and new "Day the Earth..." movies, but Star Trek is being "rebooted" too. It is finished already, but slated for 2009, just 7 years after "Nemisis" grossed the least for that run of films. Watch "...Trek" and its inevitable sequels cash in. This shit is helping your economy, remember.
I'm only averse to cash-in simpleton copycat issues, like poor dance remixes of great rock songs. That grates, but again, the original version still exists and is still available to us. That is our choice, to vote with our dollars.

It's a week away, so keep us posted with early reviews etc.
I doubt I will bother with it though, I don't go to the cinema for the sake of it anymore.

John Carpenter's
The
Thing
Oh, how we laughed. Great movie though.
